In the final leg of the 2014 general elections, Narendra Modi dramatically announced in a rally, “Yeh dil maange more”. It was a quintessential Modi soundbite: the BJP’s internal polls had captured a surge but the party leadership of Modi and his lieutenant, Amit Shah, were determined to push beyond “mission 272” towards a triple hundred. The rest, as they say, is history.

Twenty two months later, the 2017 assembly elections have shown that the BJP’s appetite is clearly undiminished. When Modi undertook a three-day intensive roadshow-cum-rally programme in his ‘adopted’ home of Varanasi, it was seen by some as a sign of desperation. More than one analyst predicted that the Modi juggernaut was being halted in the complex caste and community matrix of Uttar Pradesh. As it turns out, the BJP has swept the city and the entire eastern UP belt which went to the polls in the seventh and last phase. What was seen as desperation is perhaps a reflection of a trademark Modi-Shah campaign mantra: when ahead, simply go for the jugular.

It is this constant hunger and desire for success that separates Modi from star politicians before him. Indira Gandhi was just as popular and authoritarian but maybe less driven (she actually had interests beyond politics!). The BJP’s original Lucknow poster boy, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was charismatic and arguably a much finer public speaker; but he clearly lacked the ruthlessness that is part of the Modi persona. The Atal-Advani era was a gentler one and the BJP was still an exclusivist party struggling to shed its Brahmin-Bania upper caste image. PM Modi cites Dehradun girl’s impassioned message on Mann ki Baat

A teenager poured all her disgust in a voice message to the Prime Minister over a stinky, garbage-choked river flowing close to her backyard in the Uttarakhand capital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi liked 16-year-old Gayatri Singh’s explosive appeal for her right to live in a clean environment so much that he included the girl’s audio clip in the 30th edition of his Mann ki Baat monthly radio address on Sunday.

He complimented the class 11 student from Dehradun’s Ajabpur Kala area for flagging a public problem — the rain-fed, seasonal hill river Rispana, which has been turned into a meandering mound of garbage.

Modi quoted the girl’s message to draw people’s attention towards cleanliness, which is necessary for the success of his government’s signature programme, Swachh Bharat. He said her message should be an inspiration for all.

Barack Obama calls Narendra Modi, PM thanks him for boosting strategic ties

NEW DELHI: Just ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration as the President of the United States, President Barack Obama called up Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review "all round progress" in the relations between US and India.

As he wished the outgoing US President well for his future endeavours, Modi thanked Obama for strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.

"The two leaders reviewed with satisfaction the significant all round progress and cooperation in ties between India and the US in the past few years," said ministry of external affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup.

According to a White House readout, Obama thanked Modi for his partnership and the two reviewed joint efforts of cooperation including defence, civil nuclear energy, and enhanced people-to-people ties.

"Recalling his visit as Chief Guest at India's Republic Day celebrations in 2015, President Obama wished the Prime Minister warm congratulations ahead of India's upcoming 68th Republic Day anniversary," said the statement.

Obama and Modi discussed the progress they have made on shared economic and security priorities, including recognition of India as a Major Defense Partner of the United States and addressing the global challenge of climate change.

Obama, who visited India twice in his eight year tenure, is leaving the White House on Friday. President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn-in as the 45th American President.

Among other south Asian neighbours, Obama also made a farewell call to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who was joined by chief executive officer Abdullah Abdullah.

India, US To Ink Cyber Framework Accord

Ushering in a new era of collaboration in the cybersphere, India and the US will sign a framework for the bilateral cyber relationship between the two countries within the next two months.

The announcement in this regard was made in a joint statement after the White House meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama.

During the meeting the two leaders emphasized that cyberspace enables economic growth and development, and reaffirmed their commitment to an open, interoperable, secure, and reliable Internet, underpinned by the multi stakeholder model of Internet governance.

"They committed to deepen cooperation on cybersecurity and welcomed the understanding reached to finalize the Framework for the US-India Cyber Relationship in the near term," the joint statement said.

A fact sheet issued by the White House said the framework would be signed within 60 days.

During the meeting PM Modi and President Obama committed to enhance cyber collaboration on critical infrastructure, cybercrime, and malicious cyber activity by state and non-state actors, capacity building, and cybersecurity research and development, and to continue discussions on all aspects of trade in technology and related services, including market access.

They have committed to continue dialogue and engagement in Internet governance fora, including in ICANN, IGF and other venues, and to support active participation by all stakeholders of the two countries in these fora.

President Obama and PM Modi committed to promote stability in cyberspace based on the applicability of international law including the United Nations Charter, the promotion of voluntary norms of responsible state behaviour during peacetime, and the development and implementation of practical confidence building measures between states.

According to the White House fact sheet, cooperation on cyber issues is a key component of the bilateral relationship between India and the United States.

The two countries have a strategic cyber relationship that reflects their shared values, common vision, and shared principles for cyberspace.

Both sides recognize the value of enhancing and further institutionalizing their broad-based cooperation on cyber issues, and in that respect, intend to complete a framework based on the following shared principles and intended forms of cooperation, it said.

The fact sheet said the two countries committed to voluntary norms under which a state should not conduct or knowingly support online activity that intentionally damages critical infrastructure or otherwise impairs the use of critical infrastructure to provide services to the public.

"A state should not conduct or knowingly support activity intended to prevent national Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) from responding to cyber incidents.

States should also not use CSIRTs to enable online activity that is intended to do harm," the fact sheet said.

Rs. 1,000 Crore Spent On Modi Government's 2-Year Ads': Arvind Kejriwal

full-page newspaper ads marked the two-year anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government today, a sharp tweet came from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been accused of spending crores on publicity.

Mr Kejriwal cited sources to allege that the central government has spent "Rs. 1,000 crore" on the ads.

The Modi government has planned a mega show at Delhi's India Gate on Saturday to mark the two-year celebration that will begin with the prime minister's rally in Uttar Pradesh this evening.

Mr Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi was criticized recently for setting side Rs. 526 crore in its budget for publicity.

The Congress has alleged that the AAP government spent Rs. 100 crore for self-promotion just between February and May. The party said an RTI query had revealed that Rs. 14.5 crore had been spent just on newspaper ads and the rest on TV, radio ads and hoardings. The money, alleged the party, could have been spent by Delhi government on the salary of poor sanitation workers and pension.

In his tweet today, Mr Kejriwal said his government had spent Rs. 150 crore in a full year.

Google bans 'deceptive' payday loan adverts from search results

Google is banning adverts for payday lenders from its search results, adding the short-term loan industry to a blacklist that includes guns, tobacco and drugs, and dealing a bitter blow to the industry.

The internet giant announced that from mid-July it would ban payday loans from its AdWords system that displays adverts at the top of search results.

The move cuts off a crucial channel for many online-only lenders. Google’s dominant search engine is a key online storefront, with lenders bidding fiercely against each other for a prime position at the top of its results.

The announcement added to a series of setbacks to the industry, which has been criticised for extortionate interest rates and predatory behaviour. Since 2014 lenders have been limited in the interest rates and additional fees they are allowed to charge, and the number of short term loans has subsequently slumped.

Although Google’s policies prohibit a long list of illegal or offensive practices, it is very rare for a licensed and regulated industry to be expressly blacklisted.

“When reviewing our policies, research has shown that these loans can result in unaffordable payment and high default rates for users so we will be updating our policies globally to reflect that,” Google’s director of global product policy David Graff said.

“This change is designed to protect our users from deceptive or harmful financial products.” He said any loans where repayment is due within 60 days would be banned.



The move was instantly criticised by the Consumer Finance Association (CFA), which represents short-term lenders.

“UK consumers enjoy a vibrant, highly competitive credit market and we will be interested to read the evidence that Google uses to justify overruling open market advertising of a legal, regulated industry to deny people freedom of choice,” the CFA’s chief executive Russell Hamblin-Boone said.

“Short term loans are a legal source of credit used by millions of people across the UK and the industry is highly regulated with a cap on the total cost of credit.”

Expect unconditional apology, not silence, CM Chandy to PM Modi after Somalia remark

Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced more heat on Thursday for comparing Kerala to Somalia with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy saying people of the state expected an unconditional apology from him and not his silence after it whipped up a controversy.

The comparison made by Modi at a poll rally in the state early this week when he said the “infant mortality rate among the scheduled tribe community in Kerala is worse than Somalia” has set off a political storm and triggered criticism in the social media.

Twitter users have responded with hashtag #PoMoneModi (Get lost Modi), a take off from the Mohanlal starrer, which features the famous punch line “Po Mone Dinesha” to ridicule some of the characters of his hit film ‘Narasimham’. Chandy flayed Modi for not withdrawing his controversial comment while CPI-M leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said his statement would result in a setback to BJP in the ensuing polls as it has insulted the people of the state. Kerala goes to polls on May 16.

In his Facebook post, Chandy said Modi had kept mum on the controversy and what Keralites want is not his silence, but an unconditional apology from the Prime Minister. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi left the election campaign rally without answering my questions. It could be due to the wide criticism he had received not only from the state, but also from Malayali community world over,” the senior Congress leader said.

Narendra Modi’s degree: Arvind Kejriwal lays a trap, BJP walks into it

It’s rather embarrassing that our leaders would be discussing whether the educational degrees of the country’s Prime Minister are fakes. When Arvind Kejriwal made the allegation, it was expected that the BJP would laugh it off, calling it a frivolous piece of fiction concocted by a leader who has nothing worthwhile to do and is desperate for some cheap publicity. Now that no less than the party president Amit Shah and senior leader Arun Jaitley have come out with a defence for the prime minister, the matter appears to be serious.

Let’s not get into a debate over whether the documents produced by both sides are genuine. As is usual in such cases, it would lead us nowhere. The truth would finally get buried in the din of claims and counterclaims. The issue would die down after running its course. The AAP points out to several discrepancies in the BA degree of Modi. When the mark-sheet shows the year 1977, how can the degree issued mention it as 1978? How come, it alleges, the names are different in the mark-sheet and the degree certificate? No Narendra Damodar Modi passed out from Delhi University in 1978, the party claims, adding that the only Narendra Modi to graduate in the year from the varsity was Narendra Mahavir Modi, a resident of Rajasthan.

The BJP, on its part, has produced the BA and MA certificates of the Prime Minister and claims them to be genuine. We don’t have clear answers from the party on the discrepancies pointed out by AAP leaders, but they are expected to brush these off as clerical errors. The party would like others to believe that the allegations are pure fiction with no basis in reality. But why did it need to get into this in the first place?
Nobody was discussing the degree issue with any seriousness, but after the BJP’s media conference it has assumed some gravitas. It’s possible the AAP will dig out some more documents in the coming days and keep the BJP leaders on their toes. Television debates will only add to the party’s discomfiture. It could have done without the unnecessary attention but given the party’s natural inclination to give it back, its response is not unexpected.
Shah said AAP has taken the public discourse to a new low. He could be right, but the BJP has not exactly been the standard-bearer among political parties in this respect either. But such allegations don’t seem to bother the AAP. The fact that it managed to engage the BJP on the matter is good enough. Actually, it’s playing the BJP’s game when it comes to staying in news and putting the opposition in a situation of discomfiture. In a way what the BJP is doing to the Congress, the AAP is doing to the BJP.

It’s pointless to be judgmental over a certificate or two. It won’t diminish Narendra Modi. Political parties play their little games. The media is their new battle field. Here no low is low enough. Source: http://www.firstpost.com
